Our brief

Thewlis Cocktail Lounge is swathed in pure decadence, with hedonistic gold and black décor throughout and featuring a library style floor to ceiling back bar, creating a liquor emporium, that is rarely seen outside London.

Our brief was to create a brand that symbolises the decadent, unique style of the bar. The building has a great historical importance to Leeds, so it was also important to weave this into the new branding.

How we did it

Thewlis Cocktail Lounge was named after prominent Leeds-born architect Joseph Thewlis who designed the striking frieze that adorns the front of the building on one of the oldest streets in Leeds, Park Row. The frieze on the front of a former bank depicts Yorkshire industry including miners, industrialists, cotton traders and at it’s centre Minerva the goddess of wisdom, art, schools and commerce. Minerva is often depicted with an Owl to represent wisdom but the Owl is also a symbol of Leeds. Inside, the building has original features, such as beautiful, ornate mouldings on the ceilings and walls.

We carefully designed the logo using an owl in it’s centre, the Leeds symbol that Joseph Thewlis also incorporated into the frieze outside the building. The colour scheme to be used inside the Cocktail Lounge was to be Gold and Black so we also used this in our branding to represent opulence and sophistication.

The owl is incorporated subtly at the centre of the logo but it is also used on it’s own as a monogram when it’s needed for more prominence. The menus were created on high quality GF Smith Colorplan card with leather embossing and a bright gold foil for the logo on the front to give a simple but striking look. Inside the pages were held in place with a centre strap so they could be easily updated by our client. We also supplied and installed interior decoration such as mirror and window stickers in brushed gold and signage outside as well as a traditional solid etched brass plaque on the door all reinforcing the high quality echoes of the past but with a modern twist. We also created unusual circular promotional vouchers on uncoated stock for 1 free complimentary drink.

We finished the project off with a no fuss fully responsive simple WordPress website with links to social media platforms and online table booking. The new branding has been well received getting glowing comments from customers and business associates of our clients alike!
